5th Century BC: Zeus Ammon

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

After the Greeks colonized Cyrenaicanow part of Lybiaand established settlements in the lower Nile Delta, they came to associate Zeus with the Egyptian supreme god Amun-Ra, who was often depicted with the head of a ram. The features of both deities are combined in this sculpture.

Worship of Amun, called Ammon by the Greeks, also spread north to the Greek peninsula, with statues and temples erected at Delphi, Sparta, Thebes, Aphytis, and Megalopoli. The poet Pindar wrote a hymn to Ammon, which was inscribed on a triangular pillar at Thebes, where Ammon came to become the principal local deity.

positionig-system-of-the-brainnoble-prize-in-medicine-2014-11-638The word “ammonia” is derived from Ammon; when the Roman empire spread to North Africa, they discovered mineral deposits near a temple of Ammon and thus named it sal ammoniacus (“salt of Ammon”); we now call it ammonium chloride.

We all have our own ram’s horns—the curled region of the hippocampus in the brain is called cornu ammonis, “Ammon’s horn,” with areas abbreviated as CA1, 2, 3, and 4.

The sculpture is a Roman copy of a Greek original from the late 5th century BC. (source)

1969: The Color of Pomegranates

Pomegranates-1

Sergei Parajanov’s 1969 film The Color of Pomegranates is an impressionistic biography of the 18th century Armenian ashug (poet/bard/troubadour) Sayat-Nova. Georgian actress Sofiko Chiaureli plays multiple roles in the film, both male and female, and the film has been seen as a resistant celebration of Armenian culture during Soviet domination.

2nd Century BC: The Best Leaders Are Barely Noticed

Mawangdui_LaoTsu_Ms2

太上,下知有之;其次,親而譽之;其次,畏之;其次,侮之。信不足,焉有不信焉。悠兮,其貴言。功成事遂,百姓皆謂我自然。

The best leaders are barely noticed. The next best are admired and praised. Poor leaders use coercion and fear, and the worst are despised.

If leaders do not follow the Tao, how can the people?

The wisest leaders will even seem uncertain; their hesitation shows how carefully they consider each thought.

When their work is done, and their endeavors successful, the people celebrate and say “Yes! We did it ourselves!”

Tao Te Ching, 17
